Koi Pond Keeping in NSW – Practical & Enjoyable Tips

 1. Designing a Pond You Can Enjoy

  • Location: Choose a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade—important for fish health and your comfort.

  • Viewing area: Build a bench, deck, or patio near the pond to sit and watch your koi. A cup of tea + koi = peaceful.

  • Clear water = enjoyment. Invest in a good filtration system so you can see your koi clearly year-round.

 2. NSW Climate Tips

  • NSW has mild winters and warm summers, perfect for koi:

    • In coastal areas (Sydney, Central Coast): minimal winter protection needed.

    • In colder inland areas: deeper ponds (min. 1m) are better for winter insulation.

  • Use pond shade sails or floating plants in summer to avoid overheating.

  • In winter, koi become less active—still visible, just slower. Feed less or stop when water drops below 10°C.
