Better Practices for Koi Care in Summer

Warm weather brings out the best in your pond — sparkling water, active koi, and lush plants — but it also challenges your fish’s health. To keep your koi thriving, focus on oxygen, water quality, and temperature control. Run aeration systems continuously through the day and night to prevent oxygen depletion. Waterfalls, fountains, and air stones all help keep water moving and cool. Perform small, regular water changes (10–20%) with dechlorinated water to maintain clarity and remove excess nutrients that can fuel algae growth.

Feeding habits also need adjusting in summer. Offer easily digestible, high-protein food in small portions during cooler times of the day — early morning or evening. Avoid overfeeding, as uneaten food can quickly spoil in warm water. Provide shaded areas with water lilies, floating plants, or shade cloths to protect your koi from direct sunlight and prevent overheating. Regularly check your filtration system to ensure it’s working efficiently, as higher temperatures can strain water quality. With steady aeration, balanced feeding, and thoughtful shading, your koi will stay healthy, active, and beautifully vibrant all summer long.
