Spring is the perfect time to reconnect with your pond and koi.

As water temperatures rise and fish become more active.

Start by monitoring water temperature daily—once it reaches 12–15°C, your koi’s metabolism increases, meaning they’ll need more care and light feeding. If temps are over 10°C, begin feeding a wheat germ-based or year-round koi food like Saki Hikari Balance or Hikari Gold 2–3 times per week. Avoid protein-heavy foods until the water stays consistently above 15°C.

Test water quality for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, GH, and KH, and address any imbalances with partial water changes, bi-carb, & a pond block.

Gently clean out debris and trim dead plants, but hold off on deep cleaning to avoid disturbing beneficial bacteria.

Observe your koi while feeding

Don’t forget to inspect equipment, especially your UV clarifier, and replace old bulbs. Most importantly, add a pond block now to kickstart healthy bacteria levels after winter. A little care now means a thriving pond and happy fish all season long.
