Fish develop their scales at a young age. Once they're done, they'll just keep becoming bigger as the fish does. Transparent scales overlap one another. Koi fish can have abnormally huge (dositu scales), tiny, or even no scales (leather Skin), depending on the type. They may also have a lot of reflection. Easy to see koi in the pond with lustre and sheen in the sun.
You shouldn't try to breed koi that aren't fully mature. It makes for weaker fry as a result. Fish should only spawn when they are fully grown and in good health. It's required that a female be two years old. All males should be at least one year older than their female counterparts
