Deep-red Comet goldfish
Comets are a long-bodied, single-tailed variety of goldfish (Carassius auratus), recognised for their long, flowing tail and streamlined body. Their colour can range from orange and red-orange through to deep red, scarlet and rich crimson.
The really impressive specimens can develop a colour that looks almost lacquered or blood-red, especially when viewed in good natural light.
Several things contribute to that appearance:
- Genetics — The underlying genetics determine how intensely red the fish can become and how well it retains that colour as it matures.
- Pigment development — Young goldfish can change considerably as they grow. Red/orange pigment can intensify, consolidate or become more evenly distributed.
- Age and maturity — A young Comet may begin relatively orange and develop a much deeper red as it matures.
- Skin quality — The depth and clarity of the skin can affect how rich the colour appears.
- Nutrition — A balanced diet supports normal pigmentation and health. Foods containing carotenoid pigments can enhance red/orange tones, but they cannot create genetic colour that the fish doesn't possess.
- Water quality — Excellent, stable water helps the fish maintain healthy skin and colour. Poor water quality can cause stress and dull the overall appearance.
