The fish in the photo and the video below is the exact shubunkin goldfish you receive when you order.

The beautiful colors on Shubunkin goldfish come from a combination of genetics, pigment cells, and selective breeding.

  Where the Color Comes From:

 Pigment Cells (Chromatophores):

  1. Shubunkins have special skin cells that produce different pigments:

    • Erythrophores – red/orange pigments

    • Melanophores – black pigments

    • Xanthophores – yellow pigments

    • Iridophores – reflect light, giving blue or metallic shimmer

    • Leucophores – white appearance

  2. Calico Pattern:
Their unique calico look—blue, red, orange, black, and white—is created by the nacreous scale type, a mix between metallic and matte scales. This gives them a speckled, translucent effect.

  3. Genetics:
Shubunkins are bred from comet goldfish and calico types. Breeders select for vibrant color combinations over generations.

  4. Diet & Environment:

    • A carotenoid-rich diet (e.g. spirulina, krill) boosts reds and oranges.

    • Sunlight and clean water help maintain bright, healthy coloration.

These comets have a varied diet that includes processed pellets, fresh greens, and even algae. If you currently have koi in the pond, you can feed them the same food.  add fish food to the order  120g of fish food lasts about 1-2 weeks.
