feeding-pond.jpg  If you do things right with your koi they will reward you as lifetime pets, We had many people come into the Windsor fish hatchery to feed the koi and relax, the sights and sounds of a pond have a calming affect on your mind watching the koi gracefully swimming around in the pond can be enjoyed by all ages.

Create your own pond

Koi can reach up to 100cms and should be kept in groups, so with this in mind you will need to plan in advance if you are building a pond.

The pond needs to be long & wide so the fish can, exercise and reach full growth potential. The deeper the better nothing less than 40cms is the minimum , a larger volume of water is more stable in terms of water temperature.

Check with your local council about fencing requirements.

The easiest and most economical way to custom build a pond to your desired size and shape,  and make it watertight is by using flexible liner. At the new hatchery we have 10 30mtr x 11mtr ponds all lined.

We have a sand base here that wont hold water. Use the best quality you can afford. We used commercial grade liner that is more than 1ml thick rubber. If you have a large pond to line contact us on info@windsorfishhatchery.com.au.

Digging

When your digging a pond deeper than 3 feet make sure you have a gentle slope on the sides to prevent it falling in.

Where to site the pond

It may seem obvious to build a pond in the biggest open space in your yard, but the best place is near the house. Its cheaper and easier to get a safe outdoor electricty supply.also away from trees is important, as debris will clog up pumps and pollute water very quickly.

Pond Lining

Lay  liner on a sunny day. The sun will warm it, making it far more supple. Stretch the liner out in the sun then use the weight of the  water to pull the creases out. Remember to use sand or carpet underlay to protect the liner.

after 34 years Windsor fish hatchery has moved. We are building a new hatchery on the central coast. These two ponds are two of the smaller ponds at 14mtrs x 7mtrs x 3mtrs.

They are for the female and male breeders when finished they will have around 40 large fish in each. These fish have grown together for many years, they are separated all year. We only put certain pairs together once a year for breeding.

Pumps, waterfalls, creeks, filters will control the environment year round to make the best possible home for our most precious koi.
